Formidable!
ReplyDeleteTremendous output and everyone quality. I remember Bill and Helen moving to Elland from 5 North Villas.. was it?. At the time I was North of England sales rep for Transatlantic Records. I could have sold a bunch more had RCA at Washington pressed enough "Lancashire Lad"!
ReplyDeleteBlimey, I am old. Remember so many of these. And how could I forget Rosie Hardman and her great voice? Terrific.
ReplyDeleteI still have so many of these albums, mostly in near mint condition. It's like a timeline through my youth. I'll shut up now before I get maudlin.
ReplyDeleteKen, Jools and Anonymous - and Sedayne too - if you have any memories to share, I can be found at wildchild.butler@googlemail.com or at the other end of 0161 226 5461. Thanks for the enthusiastic response. Plus, I'm still finding items for the Discography. For instance, in less than the 24 hours since I posted, I discovered this:

TOP69 The Spinners, Songs Spun in Liverpool (Live) [Topic, EP] Ω ∆
Impressive job! Thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteTOP98 Blow The Man Down - AL Lloyd, Ewan MacColl and Harry H Corbett
ReplyDeleteTOP99 A Hundred Years Ago - AL Lloyd and Ewan MacColl
TOP100 The Coast Of Peru - AL Lloyd and Ewan Mcoll
All 3 ep's credit Bill Leader as recording. Sleeve notes state they are re-issues of T7 and T8 called Sea Shanties.
Thanks for a wonderful trip down memory lane.
Thanks, Anonymous, I shall proudly add to the Discography. No mention of T7 and T8 in the Topic Catalogue as given in the book, Three Score & 10. I shall dig deeper into this. Mike
ReplyDeleteAh, so that would be Row, Bullies, Row (Topic 8T7) and The Black Ball Line (Topic 8T8). Will check direct with Bill that these two are his.
ReplyDeleteMike
This is a stunning collection Mike(and Bill) - what a back catalogue to be responsible for! So many intriguing highways and byways, and the covers are endlessly fascinating.
ReplyDeleteBill replied, and this is what he said:

8T7 A.L. Lloyd & Ewan MacColl, Row, Bullies, Row [Topic, 8" LP] Ω My only input to T7&T8 “T”(not “8T”, by the way) was to supervise the reissue. The recording had been done before I joined Topic, and had been released as two 10” LPs on Stinson in the US.
8T8 A.L. Lloyd & Ewan MacColl, The Black Ball Line [Topic, 8" LP] Ω See above
eLDY 4155 Ewan MacColl w A.L. Lloyd, Chants de Marins Anglais No.1 [Le Chante du Monde, 7" EP, Fr. partial issue of 8T7] Ω Topic and Le Chant du Monde briefly had an exchange arrangement of which is part Ch du M format was 7” LP not EP, i.e. they ran at 331/3 not 45.

Lloyd, Singing Sailors [Wattle, 10" LP, Aus. issue culled from TRL3, The Singing Sailor, and 8T8] Ω † I don’t have the Stinson details to hand, but my understanding is that the Stinson sessions were the source of all these Sailor Song albums: TRL3, T7,T8, the Ch du M and the Wattle releases. .

FW 8501 Ewan MacColl and Dominic Behan, The Singing Streets [Folkways, US issue of 12T41] Ω This was a Kenneth S Goldstein commission, originally for Riverside, who decide to pass on it. KSG sold it (or more likely gave it) to Folkways. The Topic/Riverside deal restricted the Topic release of stuff done for Riverside. No such restriction existed with Folkways, so Topic gave it a local release, changing the name, so that we were not living off the reputation of the Norton Park documentary

CDDDD1072 The Ian Campbell Folk Group, The Times They Are A-Changin' [Castle Music, 2CDs] I don’t know the details of this reissue. I guess Nat’s names on it. I was there but Nat signed the cheque.
A great piece of work - it honours Bill and all that he has done and is still doing for folk - I knew most of the albums but there were still many that I hadn't realised / had forgotten that Bill had had a hand in. Thank you for putting this together.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike, And I'm still finding them. And also, conversely, removing those that I've erroneously placed there. For instance, on 30.12.13, this: 1968 12T192 The Valley Folk, All Bells in Paradise [Topic] Ω ∆ I've just scored a copy, and it definitely says 'Recorded by R.W. Swettenham'. Oh well, the search continues. (Mike, we must get together sometime for an interview for my projected Bill book.) Mike
ReplyDeleteThis is a truly heroic effort - a labour of love. Well done for compiling this. I'm in the Leader Youth division of acolytes, having only known and worked with Bill for the last 30 odd years (not forgetting John Gill)! Still proud to be part of Bill's punk period though! Phil - The Blazing Snowmen
ReplyDeleteIt`s like peeking in through a door to your past.So many sessions that Bill was involved with, so many songs and tunes. What a great legacy.Thank you for reminding me /us of the work Bill has done for music. I met him through Joe Boyd and Nat Joseph, back in 1966, who both respected him.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joe. Stay in touch. I'm writing a book about Bill, and might need to get in touch. You can contact me on wildchild.butler@googlemail.com Best, Mike
